The oldest street festival in the world is coming to Liverpool City Centre this August. Ratha Yatra, CHARIOT FESTIVAL, is a joyous, colorful celebration of Indian spirituality and culture which traces back more than 3,000 years.
This summer, for the secondtime, the festival will be held at Williamson Square.
The main event is the procession, in which festival-goers, pilgrims and faith leaders pull a colorful chariot carrying sacred deities of Jagannatha, Subhadra and Balarama, while people dance alongside, singing sacred mantras and playing traditional music.
The procession will go down from Williamson Sq to Church street down to Lord St and back to Williamson Square where festival fun will continue until 5 p.m. It will feature cultural and educational exhibits, a main stage with Kirtan (musical mantra meditation) and bharat-natyam (classical Indian dance), and a free vegetarian feast for all. There will also be booths set up with traditional crafts, books, Indian dress-up, face painting, mehendi (henna tattoos)
The celebration will take place on Saturday, 18 August 2018 from 12noon to 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
